How do I transfer a domain to Virgo Networks? Print

  • 0

In short: Order the transfer through the Virgo Networks Client Area before changing anything at the current registrar. The exact process depends on the domain ending: .uk domains normally use a registrar tag, while many other domains use an EPP/Auth code.

Before you begin

  • Confirm that you control the domain and can sign in at its current registrar.
  • Check which nameservers and DNS records are currently in use.
  • Make sure the registrant contact email is current and accessible.
  • Do not cancel the old hosting or email service until the transfer and any separate migration are complete.
Important: Moving the registration does not automatically move the website, email or DNS hosting. Leave the existing nameservers in place if those services must continue where they are.

Transfer a .uk domain

  1. Place the domain-transfer order in the Virgo Networks Client Area.
  2. At the current registrar, change the domain's registrar tag to the exact tag shown in the transfer instructions.
  3. Allow time for the registry change to be detected, then check the order status in the Client Area.

A traditional .uk registrar transfer normally uses the registrar tag rather than an EPP/Auth code. If your current provider asks for a destination tag, use only the value in your Virgo Networks order or support instructions.

Transfer .com and many other domains

  1. Unlock the domain at the current registrar.
  2. Request its EPP/Auth code.
  3. Place the transfer order and enter that code when requested.
  4. Approve any confirmation message sent to the registrant contact.
  5. Keep the domain unlocked until the transfer completes.

Registry rules can prevent a transfer shortly after registration, a previous transfer or certain contact changes. The Client Area will show the order status; contact support if the status does not explain what is required.

After completion

  • Confirm the nameservers are still the intended ones.
  • Check the website, email and important DNS records.
  • Enable renewal reminders and confirm the registrant details.
  • Only then retire the old registrar or hosting service.
Avoid downtime: If DNS also needs to move, copy and verify the zone before changing nameservers. Pay particular attention to MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC and verification records.

Start a transfer

See the Virgo Networks domain transfer page or open a support ticket if the domain is already expired, disputed or locked.
