How do mailboxes, aliases, groups and catch-all addresses differ? Print

  • 0

In short: A mailbox stores messages and has a password; an alias forwards one address to another; a group forwards to several recipients; and a catch-all receives mail sent to otherwise nonexistent addresses.

TypeBest useSeparate login?
MailboxA person or application needs to keep and read mailYes
Alias/forwarderOne alternate address should deliver to one destinationNo
GroupOne address should distribute to several recipientsNo
Catch-allReceive otherwise undeliverable addresses for the whole domainNo

Create an alias

  1. In SiteWorx, open Hosting Features > Email > Aliases.
  2. Select Add an Alias.
  3. Choose the domain and enter the alias name.
  4. Enter the complete destination address and save.
  5. Send a test from an unrelated mailbox.

Use groups for several recipients

Use Hosting Features > Email > Groups when an address such as sales@example.com must deliver to several people. Review membership whenever staff responsibilities change.

Be cautious with external forwarding

A forwarder relays every message, including spam. The destination provider may treat the hosting server as the sender of that forwarded spam, and forwarding can complicate SPF evaluation. Where reliability matters, consider collecting the mailbox directly instead.

Catch-all is rarely the best default: It can attract large volumes of spam sent to invented addresses, consume quota and make real addresses harder to manage. Use explicit aliases whenever practical.

Deleting an alias

Deletion stops future forwarding but does not remove messages already delivered to the destination. Record business-critical aliases before reorganising them.

Further guidance

See the InterWorx documentation for email aliases and catch-all addresses.
