How do colocation power allocations work? Print

  • 0

In short: Keep the measured and expected load within the contracted power allocation and the rating of every connector and distribution component. Ask Virgo Networks before adding equipment or changing power arrangements.

Understand the limit

Your order defines the applicable power allocation. Device nameplate ratings, typical consumption and peak startup load are different measurements; plan for real maximum demand and any redundancy design.

Before adding equipment

  • List the device and power-supply specifications.
  • Estimate normal, peak and startup load.
  • Check connector, cable, PDU and circuit ratings.
  • Allow safe operating headroom.
  • Confirm whether redundant supplies are on genuinely separate approved feeds.

Monitor the load

Where metering is available, review it over time rather than relying on a single reading. Investigate step changes, repeated alerts, heat or unstable equipment before the circuit trips.

Never defeat protection: Do not use improvised splitters, adapters or daisy-chained extensions, and do not move a feed to a different outlet without approval. Circuit protection exists to prevent fire and equipment damage.

Redundant power

Two power supplies do not create resilience if both connect to the same upstream feed. Confirm the supplied A/B arrangement and configure equipment so loss of one approved feed does not overload the other.

Request a change

Open a Datacentre ticket with the service identifier, equipment list, expected load, connector type and desired installation date. Wait for written approval before connecting additional equipment.
