In short: In most colocation handovers, the customer-facing network port is untagged and no VLAN configuration is required on your equipment. Use the exact handover details for your service if they state otherwise.
Typical setup
- Connect the server or firewall to the assigned port.
- Leave VLAN tagging disabled unless a VLAN ID was supplied.
- Configure the assigned IP address, prefix or netmask, gateway and DNS resolvers.
- Apply a restrictive firewall policy before exposing services.
- Test the gateway first, then external IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity.
Do not guess a VLAN ID: Adding an arbitrary tag will normally make the interface unreachable. Check the order handover or ask support to confirm the port mode.
When tagging may be used
Tagged VLANs may be provided for a specifically designed service, such as multiple networks on a trunk. In that case, configure only the VLAN IDs and addressing supplied by Virgo Networks and ensure your switch or hypervisor preserves the intended isolation.
