In short: Domains and hosting services have separate renewal dates. Pay renewal invoices before the due date and never assume that an expired domain or terminated hosting account can be restored.
Domain renewal
Active domains normally generate renewal invoices in advance unless auto-renewal has been disabled. A paid invoice must be processed successfully by the registry before the domain is considered renewed; check the domain status and new expiry date.
If a domain expires
The website and email may stop working. Depending on the extension and timing, the domain may enter a grace or redemption stage with additional fees, or it may become available to someone else. Registry rules differ, so contact support immediately.
Hosting renewal
Hosting, VPS, dedicated and colocation services follow their own billing cycle. Overdue services may be suspended and later terminated according to the applicable terms. Suspension does not guarantee that data will be retained indefinitely.
Prevent avoidable expiry
- Keep the account owner's email and billing contacts current.
- Review saved payment methods before their expiry date.
- Check invoices and renewal notices rather than relying on one email.
- Review auto-renewal separately for every domain.
- Plan transfers well before expiry.
If payment was made but the service still shows overdue
Do not make repeated payments. Open a Billing ticket with the invoice number, payment time and transaction reference, omitting sensitive payment credentials.
Further guidance
See the WHMCS explanation of domain renewals.
How to confirm that renewal completed
Auto-renewal is a billing preference, not confirmation that payment and the registry renewal both succeeded. Check that the invoice is Paid, the domain status is active and the registry expiry date has moved forward. If payment completed but any of those remain unchanged, follow I’ve paid, but my invoice or service has not updated and contact Billing promptly.
