Getting started with a shared hosting account Print

  • 0

In short: Your shared hosting account is managed through SiteWorx. Start by checking the account details in the Virgo Networks Client Area, pointing the domain at the service, enabling SSL, and testing the site before changing live DNS.

1. Open your hosting service

  1. Sign in to the Virgo Networks Client Area.
  2. Open Services and select the relevant shared hosting service.
  3. Use the control-panel link to open SiteWorx. Keep the welcome email somewhere secure because it contains the original service details.

2. Decide which domain you are using

Your account already has a primary domain. To host another domain, open Hosting Features > Domains > Manage in SiteWorx, choose Add Domain, and enter the domain without www.. Select the appropriate PHP version and IP addresses shown for the account.

Before changing DNS: Build and test the site first where possible. A DNS change can also affect email, so preserve any existing MX and TXT records that are still required.

3. Build or move the website

  • Upload site files with the SiteWorx File Manager or SFTP.
  • Create databases and database users under Hosting Features > MySQL.
  • Choose the PHP version required by the application.
  • Keep configuration files and credentials outside public reach where the application supports it.

4. Enable HTTPS

Once the domain resolves to the hosting account, enable the free SSL certificate and confirm that both the main domain and www name work over HTTPS. Then update the application base URL and redirect HTTP traffic to HTTPS.

5. Check backups and email

Review the backup tools available in SiteWorx and keep an independent copy of important data. If the account will handle email, create the required mailboxes and verify delivery before moving the domain's MX records.

Go-live checklist

  • The domain and any www alias resolve to the correct hosting IP.
  • HTTPS loads without certificate warnings.
  • Forms, logins, scheduled tasks and outbound email work.
  • Existing mail records have been preserved or intentionally replaced.
  • A current backup exists and the old service remains available during the change window.

See the official InterWorx guides for adding secondary domains and using File Manager.
